Short Review of "Make Today Count" by John C. Maxwell

With the New Year approaching, people begin glancing through their life to see if it is on track with what they have always desired. Unfortunately, for most people, they are nowhere near on track, but they keep making resolutions to do better anyway. After all, one must get it together eventually, right? True, if he makes a decision to take the proper actions that will make life “better”. In my quest to do so for my own life, I have come across some books that have shown me I knew absolutely nothing when it came to living, I simply had existed all the years of my life until I decided I needed growth and change. Granted since there are hundreds of self-help gurus to choose from, where to turn and who to listen to becomes overwhelming and sometimes discouraging. So, what I have done is begun my first of short reviews on books and websites I feel have the best value regarding life lessons and personal or business growth.

A great beginner’s guide to personal growth is in the book "Make Today Count” by John C. Maxwell. For those with a short attention span like myself, Maxwell writes this book short and to the point in 130 of less than 5 x7 sized pages of information designed to fill your mind and help you begin steering the ship of your life. I found this book in the small book section of Walgreens next to the pharmacy and though a little skeptical about its contents ability, it turned out to be the best ten dollars I have spent in a while.

If your life is in disarray or nearly non-existent, you will find plenty of value in the introduction alone, learning the formula for a successful life and gaining an understanding of the purpose behind proper preparation and daily practices of certain disciplines. Besides, Maxwell does not just tell you what he learned to make his life more successful, he challenges you to make the decision to become successful as well. Maxwell gives his readers something to use and put into action immediately, no additional resources required. Each chapter ends with space for you to make a decision concerning your everyday discipline practice. Hint: your decision does not have to match Maxwell’s decision, but most successful people duplicate other successful people.

Though small and easy to misplace, “Make Today Count” is a book deserving of living in the “library of treasure” everyone should have according to success master Jim Rohn. The principles in this book are universal to gender, race, cultures, age and more. More attractively, John Maxwell breaks down the practices in each chapter as if he were teaching his own young children. He makes you feel like you've been swooped up by the large wing of a loving bird, which could be one characteristic that helped him become a respected leader. In addition to learning about his other short read self-help books, Maxwell graciously provides readers with countless references to more great reads that have helped shape his development and guided him toward the list of daily disciplines of success practices written about in the book.

Before you are finished reading "Make Today Count" you feel like you're ready to take on the world, armed with just the little information Maxwell provides you on living successfully. Success a term also becoming clearly defined in his words, for those who think it only means money and status. Read "Make Today Count" if for nothing else other than measuring whether you have successfully balanced your life according to what matters to you or helps you leave your mark on the world.

P.S.

Good hub. I like Mr. Maxwell writing style and advice. I am reading his book about attitude. Indeed, note taking and reflecting is a good way to learn.
